Mehl-Mülhens-Stiftung - 64th Preis von Europa (Group 1)

Cologne - 27th September 2026

“It sounds as if another International trip may well be on the cards for the 6-year-old and for the 3rd season in a row, Goliath has added a Group 1 victory to his impressive resume”.

For the 2nd year in a row the Preis Von Europa in Cologne has been won by Francis-Henri Graffard, who added yet another Group 1 to his CV with the 6-year-old Goliath. This was a 3rd success at the highest level for the son of Alderflug, who confirmed the form with Dubai Honour from last year’s Grosser Preis von Baden to win under an aggressive ride from Christophe Soumillon. Front running tactics have paid dividends for Goliath on both his visits to Germany and when the 2024 King George winner turned for home in front, there only ever seemed likely to be one winner. Goliath has generally held his form together quite nicely, but he has also been a frustrating horse to follow at times, as his 3rd placed finish in the Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot showed when Christophe Soumillon lost his irons in the home straight when seemingly coming with a winning run. However, his form figures in Group 1 races in Europe now read as 3 wins from 5 starts. He has danced almost every dance for his connections and brings a very high level of form to this Group 1 contest and with Dubai Honour and the 2025 German Derby winner Hochkonig in behind, the result certainly matched the form book.

Quickly into stride taking just 6.0s to reach 50 km/h when the stalls opened, Christophe Soumillon was able to control the pace from the moment the stalls opened and having worked his way to the front over the opening furlong, he headed into the back straight having covered the opening half a mile in under 54s. Dubai Honour helped to keep him honest in the back straight, but Goliath was always able to hold the inside rail and that was a significant advantage as they rounded the far turn. He swung slightly wide as they came into the home straight, but once straightened up, Goliath began to lengthen his stride and quickly asserted to have a 3 length advantage with 400m to run. He maintained that advantage on the run to the line and having recorded the fastest top speed figure in the field at 67.1 km/h, he was always in control despite the fact that both Dubai Honour and Hochkonig recorded better late speed figures.

It can be very hard to compare the form in Germany with the other Group 1 races around Europe, but at Total Performance Data we do have the advantage of having some expected average figures over this course and distance in Cologne to add some context to the race. I’m particularly interested in both the average and top speed figures recorded by the main players in this year’s Preis Von Europa, all of which were above the expected average figures. This is a Group 1 race, won by a proven Group 1 performer and so those above average figures may well have been expected, but despite the Good to Soft ground, Goliath’s average speed figure ranked in the top 10 average speed figures recorded by the winners over 10 furlongs or further in Germany so far this year. A winning time of 2:28.38 made this the 4th fastest winning time in the Preis von Europa since the year 2000 and whilst Goliath may not quite be at the same level of form that he reached at Ascot in 2024, he has shown that he retains the ability of a performer at the highest level. An average stride length figure of 22.91 ft meant that Goliath recorded one of the shortest strides length figures in the field, but that stretched to a peak of 25.06 ft, an increase of 2.15 ft (9.4%). That was the biggest variance between average and peak stride length figures in the field and would suggest that Goliath was able to travel well within himself before stretching clear to show his class in the latter stages.

Dubai Honour was only 3rd in the VirginBet Chester Stakes last time and Hochkonig has failed to reach the same level of form that he showed when winning the German Derby in 2025 and that may raise some slight question marks over this form. Christophe Soumillon’s post-race comments that “He loves the track and conditions were perfect for him today. Nobody was going to make the run in, so I just let him go to the front and he changed his leads perfectly in the turn. When I asked him to quicken, he responded really well”. (Source: At The Races) would suggest that he felt that this was the ideal setup for his mount and having ridden Goliath like the best horse in the race, he got his just rewards. It sounds as if another International trip may well be on the cards for the 6-year-old and for the 3rd season in a row, Goliath has added a Group 1 victory to his impressive resume. He came up slightly short when 11 lengths behind Kalpana at Ascot in July, but that may yet prove to be a very solid piece of form and much like his amazing trainer, Goliath continues to be very capable at the highest levels of the sport.
