John C. Harris Stakes - Grade 3

Santa Anita - 26th September 2026

Little Opal took her perfect career record to 3 wins from 3 starts as she ran out a relatively comfortable winner of the John C. Harris Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. Stall 10 at Santa Anita is not the penalty that it might be seen as on other turf courses in the US and having broken smartly with an opening furlong time of 16.52s to get to the 5 furlong pole. From that point onwards, Emisael Jaramillo was always in the ideal position and despite looking slightly awkward when crossing the dirt course, Little Opal quickly straightened herself and always had enough in hand to hold the fast-finishing Day to Day.

The daughter of Caravaggio has now won all 3 starts and took this first step into stakes company in her stride, having been a comfortable winner of an Allowance Claimer at Del Mar earlier in the month. A home-bred for Donald R. Dizney, she has clocked the fastest top speed figure in the field on each of her 3 starts to date, reaching an impressive 44.30 mph on the speed-o-meter in Saturday’s victory. A turn-of-foot like this is always going to get her rivals in trouble and having now proven herself over the extended 6 furlong trips, there are plenty of options now open to Doug O’Neill’s 3-year-old filly. An average stride length figure of 25.39 ft (ranked 2nd of 9) was above the TPD expected average figure for a winner of this race and for such a long striding filly to be able to clock an extremely quick 10.32s for the first full furlong is a remarkable feat. Her long stride kept her in front and although Day to Day did close the gap in the home straight, it is worth noting that Little Opal still ran a race best figure of 11.70s for the final split and recorded a better run-out speed figure than the runner-up (36.71 mph). Having worked hard to get to the front, Little Opal found plenty when required in the closing stages and the evidence we have would suggest that she may well be capable of producing a Grade 1 winning performance.

Her trainer’s post-race comments that “This stakes race is something we thought about a few months ago. It was coming back a little quick from her last win, but Emisael [Jaramillo] knows her well and he felt like she had good energy coming into this race. We got a great cozy outside post, with not a lot of speed early on. Just a great ride and a great filly” would point to the fact that they felt this setup at Santa Anita would be ideal for Little Opal (Source: TDN). However, on all 3 starts to date, Little Opal has recorded a top speed figure above 44 mph and with that kind of speed, she is always likely to get herself into a prominent position when the gates open, regardless of the track and race setup. An overall winning time of 1:12.76 was slower than the average time figure for a winner over this course and distance from the TPD database and that does need to be allowed for, but early speed is such a key asset in turf sprints, especially around the turn in the US that I am happy to take a more positive view of this performance despite the overall time figure. Little Opal has now made it 3 wins from 3 starts and if she continues to progress, she seems highly likely to make it 4 from 4 next time.
