Victoria Stakes
Woodbine - 12th July 2026
Romero Maragh may have dropped his stick inside the final 100 yards of the Victoria Stakes at Woodbine on Sunday, but it didn’t matter because his mount, UNCLE DODO, proved to be very game in the final furlong as he dived for the line to win the $125,000 prize. Bred by Hoolie Racing Stable in Kentucky, the son of Uncle Mo had been an eye-catcher on debut when finishing 3rd behind American Pope on the 14th June. He was slightly slow to leave the stalls and was as much as 7 lengths behind the leader at halfway on his debut. However, he finished his race well and recorded a final furlong time of 12.66s, 0.7s faster than the winner and his run-out speed of 54.8 km/h was 4 km/h faster than any of his rivals too. His jockey’s post-race comments to Woodbine that “He’s a young horse. First time he just got the first time jitters or else he would have won” certainly rang true and Barbara Minshall’s 2-year-old made no mistake 2nd time around.

Uncle Dodo certainly started better on Sunday with the benefit of that first experience on the track under his belt and he found himself within 0.25s of the lead with 3 furlongs to run. Once asked to stretch, he reached an average stride length of 7.32m around the turn and recorded a longer stride than the runner-up (Titan Ready) all the way up the Woodbine straight. The 11.91s that he ran for the penultimate furlong was the only time in the contest that he recorded the fastest furlong split in the field, but it was enough to get him on terms and ultimately his longer stride and willing attitude inside the final furlong were enough to see him reverse the form with Titan Ready. A winning margin of 0.02s does confirm the view from the photo finish that this was a very close finish, but despite still showing some signs of inexperience, the way that he worked hard to get himself to the front can only be seen as a positive. Although his run-out speed (53.2 km/h) ranked only 3rd, the fact that the winner and the runner-up were always in a prominent position in a race run with a finishing speed below 96% would more than account for that and the key statistic, his late speed (58.3 km/h ranked 1st) is the figure to focus on.
We have recorded data for 92 juveniles at Woodbine so far in 2026 and only 4 have recorded a better average speed figure than the 61.3 km/h recorded by Uncle Dodo to win this race in a time of 1:04.98. His trainer also trained his dam (Dream It Is) to win in Stakes company and having produced this level of performance on just his 2nd start, there is every chance that Uncle Dodo may yet be able to reach into graded company as a 2-year-old before the year is out.
