Westminster 136th Grosser Preis von Berlin (G1)

Sir Mark Prescott and Luke Morris were successful in this race with Alpinista in 2021 when she beat the subsequent Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe winner Torquator Tasso at the start of a series of six Group 1 wins that culminated in her own success in Paris a year later. So naturally when they win the same race 5 years later with TIFFANY, the comparisons will start to be made. For what it’s worth, Tiffany ran a faster time than Alpinista did when recording a winning time of 2:28.62 to win on Sunday, but I don’t really want to make this comparison the point of this review. Tiffany is not Alpinista and she would need to win a lot more races at the highest level before any significant and meaningful comparisons could be made, but at the age of 6 she has now won a Group 1 and this has got to be considered to be one of the best performances of her career.
Her form figures in Germany now read 1-112-22-1 and the last 4 of those efforts have all come in Group 1 company. Although no match for Bay City Roller in the Grosser Allianz Preis von Bayern in November, that form has worked out extremely well and if we take George Scott’s multiple Group 1 winner out of the equation, Tiffany’s in-race metrics came out a clear 2nd and only the winner ran a better time for the final quarter of a mile. This race was run on a much quicker surface and after quite an awkward start where several of the runners were competing for room behind the leader, she settled nicely in the middle of the pack for Luke Morris. As the pace chart below shows, the injection of pace from Innora after 3 furlongs helped to stretch the field and give those in behind a little more racing room. As they turned for home, the leader began to tire and perhaps we could make the case that Tiffany was slightly fortunate to find the gap opened perfectly in front of her as they straightened for the judge.
When asked to go and win her race, Tiffany responded to Luke Morris’ encouragement and eventually got the better of a 4 way battle inside the final furlong, despite the fast-finishing Bright Light (Andreas Suborics) lunging for the line with a race best late speed figure of 60.5 km/h. Tiffany held on to win by a neck, with Dubai Future only half-a-length back in 3rd, but she had the race won with a burst of speed at the top of the straight to get herself to the front. Having hit the frame on several occasions, she was certainly worthy of this Group 1 success and her late speed figure was less than 1% slower than that of the more patiently ridden Bright Light. Her winning time was 4s faster than the expected time for a winner of this race and all of her in-race speed metrics matched those that were expected from our database. In a close finish like this, the connections of the runner-up may fancy their chances of reversing this form at some point and Bright Light certainly took a big step forwards. However, Tiffany’s average stride length figure of 7.43m ranked behind Bright Light and yet she was still able to hold on in a race run at a strong pace. I suspect that had it been required, she could have found more for Luke Morris and given how consistent she is, she seems the more likely of the pair to add to this success.
We don’t have the data from Alpinista’s victory in 2021, but I don’t think we need it. Tiffany’s in-race metrics compare well with Rebel’s Romance when he won this race in 2025 and having never failed to finish outside of the first 3 in 5 attempts at Group 1 races, Tiffany is a star in her own right. This was a battling display against a field of largely proven performers at the level and she came out on top. I won’t put it in writing that she can’t win a Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe as you never know in racing and with her Group 1 form, you’d have to think the idea is at least on the table for Elite Racing. That is probably a step too far, especially with what looks to be an above average crop of 3 and 4-year-olds around in the middle distance ranks, but there are other opportunities for her to add to this first top level success, especially in Germany and I do expect her to add to this success before the end of the year.
